I believe their short answer is: to hurt other people. In some cultures this is referred to as "counting coup." You touch your death stick to their chest, and that means you have defied them. It is primitive. But, so are they.
Thunderbird is a nice way to use Gmail. You can incorporate Email, Contacts and Calendar in the one app, and it doesn't hide email behind categories unless you set them up yourself, and also allows the nice subfolder setup I find helpful. You can also set up local folders to store email off of Google's servers. I may try to move over to a different email service at some point, but I'm boring and know how to keep my marketing target to a minimum with diligent privacy scrubs and data wiping off marketing lists.
I believe SMTP is "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol."
When I was an IT manager for many businesses with Exchange Servers, I used to utilize SpamHaus for pre-scanning incoming email for spam, and it was pretty good for that purpose. But I wouldn't trust them now. Occasionally, we would have to clear a false positive for one of my client's servers at SpamHaus, usually after one of the internal client machines became infected and was spitting out spam behind the firewall. As we used to say, can't stop everyone from visiting those Russian porn sites. A different era than it is now.

Yes, I’m familiar with the Thunderbird app. It has built-in provision for Gnu Privacy Guard key generation and key management. I liked it better when the ciphertext displayed before sending, but here we are.
Yes, I’m aware of the assertion that the “S” in smtp stands for “simple” but it isn’t one with which I agree. Many of us have always referred to it as “send mail transfer protocol” because it is not a protocol having to do with receiving email (pop3, imap, etc.) and therefore it is not so simple. Indeed, smtp is about sending email and that’s what it is doing. A thing is what it does. And smtp sends email.
Local folders have nothing to do with Gmail folders. The promotions, spam, updates, and social folders are not under your control, cannot be removed by you, and your messages are filtered into those folders without your control. You cannot even teach the thing to treat your messages differently.
There’s quite a lot of goodness to marketing. I don’t mind.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment and for reading my stuff.
If you don’t ever use Gmail you also don’t ever have to deal with their stupid folders on your end. You are missing my concern, which is that I have repeatedly sent emails from my email server to recipients who use Gmail and who have it on their phone or other device and my messages to them are auto filtered to promotions, updates, spam, without their knowledge, without their consent, and nobody informs me. This presents a difficulty that they are unlikely to overcome by doing what you want them to do, and which I don’t mind them doing, which is using Thunderbird. It is a difficulty because it intercepts communications and prevents them, so for me to work around the difficulty, I have to at times text or even call people who won’t otherwise be aware that Gmail has deliberately hidden my messages from them. This is a result that I’ve experienced directly, it irritates me massively, and the results are the actual goals of Gmail/Google/Alphabet. I suspect you can probably see why your helpful suggestion isn’t helpful to me in my situation at this time. kthx
Gmail used to be a comparatively innocuous product which was a bait for the unwary. It is now a terribly evil product deliberately made vile by evil men and women who hate decency and goodness. It will never be any better and it is very likely to become even worse, because these are truly wicked people. I discourage everyone I know and everyone I will ever meet from using Gmail or any other Google/Alphabet product ever because they are horrid. I actually don’t mind if you disagree with my concerns or reasoning. I’m going to continue in my fixed point of view however much you seek to talk to me about how it really isn’t that bad.
Why? Is there a short answer? They already have money, and a measure of fame/status. What is the defined benefit of destroying cultural icons?
I believe their short answer is: to hurt other people. In some cultures this is referred to as "counting coup." You touch your death stick to their chest, and that means you have defied them. It is primitive. But, so are they.
Well said, more now then ever every single time I give in it comes back to bite me worse than before.
Thank you for your kind words and for reading my stuff.
Couple of notes - maybe you're aware.

I wasn't suggesting otherwise. Just trying to be helpful.
I am under no illusions about Google or Gmail.
I didn't understand your problem is when others use it.
Simple misunderstanding.
It okay. I can be cranky about these things.
I had a Gmail account from roughly 2004. Got better.
So you have a domain and a mail server I take it?
How is that setup?
You mentioned you have problems with your static IP and SpamHaus.
